Shirley
Orlando is a 50 year resident of "Surf City, USA". Being raised
in a musical family she developed an early passion, no, make
that addiction to all things musical.
Shirley worked at Beach Music Center in the late 60's and through
1976, when she opened Huntington Music in Huntington Beach. She
operated this local icon until 2001 when huge box stores, and personal
matters convinced her to close the store.
During the year in which she was not employed, Shirley wrote a
musical, "Surf City USA!", which in it's World Premiere at the
Huntington Beach Playhouse, was sold out for a 17 day
run.
In 2001 Shirley opened Island Bazaar, which now specializes in
all things ukulele. Happily back with the music crowd, she
directs two ukulele groups, "Ukulele Jam, and the "Surf City Strummers",
and is the host of a third, "Kolohe", a group which is managed
by Kent Olson, and directed by Uncle Henry Kamai. These groups
and the ukulele classes that Island Bazaar provides keeps the ukulele
in the forefront in "Surf City, USA!"
If you have any questions about ukulele or music in general, email
Shirley at shirley@ukuleleparadise.com and
she will be happy to respond in whatever capacity she is able. Aloha & a
warm mahalo to all for your support of Island Bazaar of Huntington
Beach.
